thank you frank.

A little Frank makes the day so much lovelier.

This song just happens to be a favorite of mine and the dialogue before it is so darling.

This song always makes me wish I was in love.
It also makes me wish love songs were more like this these days.

home.

The words of 2 Nephi chapter 22 have become something that I hold very close to my heart. I find great comfort in knowing that my Heavenly Father truly knows me and is aware of my struggles. He is constantly reminding me of that and always finding ways to bless me.

That's not all but that's all for now.

bird's eye view

The last couple months I've felt like I've been pushing a cart up a hill. Every time I think I've almost gotten to the top I hit a huge rock and stumble back down the trail I've already climbed or I get stuck in a bush or my cart topples over and everything falls out.

It has been such a draining and frustrating hike but I finally feel like I've made it to the top and the view is not only breathtaking but also very enlightening.

Now that I have the time and luxury to look down at what I've climbed and where I've been I understand everything so much better:
Every time I've stumbled back to somewhere I've already crossed I got a re-do and the opportunity to learn things in a better way. I also got to see and experience a lot of things that I missed the first time.
Whenever I got stuck in a bush and just wanted to give up it would turn out that the bush had some sort of fruit or nut that I ended up enjoying and essentially needing to get me through the rest of the climb.
Every time my cart toppled over I would have to stop and pick everything up which would force me to go through what I was carrying and gave me the chance to leave the things that I didn't need and were just a waste of space. It also helped remind me of the things I was lugging around that were good and worth the weight and struggle.

At last, I'm breathing fresh air and have had time to rest so I can prepare myself for the next mountain.

ten little indians

  1. I really miss Thomas today.
  2. I'm in desperate need of some sunshine therapy.
  3. I swear my dog gets cuter and cuter everyday.
  4. Audrey Hepburn's movie Sabrina is just my favorite these days. I'm finding that I relate more than ever now to that beautifully naive and honest character.
  5. I've finally taken on the task of organizing my sea of clothing that my room has become. Anyone that's witnessed this cluttered ocean knows how big this task is for me!
  6. Cleaning up my room has inspired me to take on the rest of my apartment and I'm finally starting to decorate and think of ways to utilize the space. It's about time.
  7. I really have an unhealthy love for chai tea and I'm pretty sure I've had like 4 cups already today.
  8. For the first time in my life I LOVE CHURCH. I love everything about it. I especially love my darling friends I've made recently...just the loveliest people.
  9. I am considering going somewhere in Europe to do WWOOF and I'm getting more and more excited about the idea. I think this may actually happen folks.
  10. The Tim DeChristopher case just angers me- don't even get me started! I can't get over that he was found guilty and the fact that he was even tried in the first place just boggles my mind. I really feel like it's just the government trying to make an example out of him and I really don't think their pettiness is going to scare people from acting on their beliefs- especially when those beliefs are related to our environment and preserving what is left of it. If anything this whole case and what Tim did kind of gives me a feeling of empowerment and leaves me with a sense of hope. I'm grateful for people like Tim.

pine cone pockets

I've noticed the last couple of weeks that I have a weird fascination with objects that I find outdoors. Every other time I go out to walk my dog I come back with my pocket filled with a pine cone or a rock or a lovely leaf that I found interesting. I really enjoy all of my little found treasures. There's a ledge on my kitchen window that's covered with different rocks and stones that I've collected and every time I walk by it my heart smiles a little bit.

I would love nothing more then to just live in the middle of the forest for little bit and spend my days exploring and collecting little things here and there and finding ways to use them. I wouldn't mind having a coffee table made completely of acorns or making some kind of article of clothing out of soft bark. I think I would also spend my days just writing forever and baking treats like chocolate croissants or strawberry pie.
Man I need a vacation...

exhausted exhaust

Dear Salt Lake City drivers,
I would really appreciate it if you only honked when there is truly an emergency. I've noticed these last couple months that the unnecessary honking has become quite ridiculous and it really makes driving more stressful than it already can be. We're not in LA or New York, we're in Salt Lake and I just don't feel like Salt Lake is the kind of place where it's okay to be a rude driver. Let's not forget our manners the second we get in our cars please. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Haley Knight

iridescent thoughts. iridescent people.

Lately I've been thinking way too much about the past and way too much about the future. It's a bit overwhelming.

I went to Rodizio Grill for the first time last weekend and oh my goodness. The second I walked in I was having an anxiety attack.
The salad bar was first. I'm pretty sure I had like 13 different things on my plate when I finished the dance around that ring of lettuce and pasta goodness.
Before I could even finish a third of what was on my plate people were running around throwing pieces of meat at me. I didn't even know what I saying yes to most of the time when they were asking me if I wanted whatever they were serving.
I got to a point where I was staring at the scraps left from the salad bar while eyeing the pork, grilled pineapple and steak headed my way. I almost lost it. Don't get me wrong, everything at that restaurant is so delicious and I had a great time, it was just not an ideal environment for me.

This dining experience has really reminded me of all the thinking I've been doing. The scraps from the salad bar are my past and the delicious meats being carried around are my future. The thing is I don't know why I'm staring at either because I'm not hungry and I don't want to be reminded of what I've already partook of. Why do we waste so much time and energy thinking of what could have been, what was, and freaking out about what's to come? I think sometimes it's important that we just focus on the now. I know that I myself need to concentrate on who I am today and what's going to matter right now. (Of course it's also good to think about the future and plan for it but we shouldn't get carried away and obsess about it.) I feel like we're living in a pretty rushed place in this day and time and life is way too simple to get caught up in all of the useless complicated details.

After that clutter of words, here is my thought for the moment:

Simplify, simplify and simplify.

I've been listening to Hurricane Bell's album Tonight is the Ghost all day long. It's fit quite perfect into my thoughts this week. They've recently released a new song that I am obsessed with. They did a cover of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow and it's just the best. I think I love it more than the Shirelles classic version.

I apologize if none of this makes any sense. I'm not sure I know how to make sense of my words or thoughts these days.

boots, blackberries and baby ben

Today was literally the greatest day.

My little baby Ben that I nanny has been in the pediatric ICU for the past two weeks and I haven't gotten to see him because I've been busy with his sister and running errands. So sad. This morning that changed and I had a couple hours to go visit with the gingerbread man. (That's my weird nickname for him. His sister's nickname is even weirder.) Oh my goodness I started crying when I walked into his room. I have missed that little guy SO much and the second I walked up to his little bed he heard me talking to him and just stared at me with his big beautiful blue eyes and started fussing until the nurse came in and got him out so I could hold him. We cuddled for like an hour and he spent three quarters of it just looking at me. The poor little man has so many tubes going in and out of him so it's pretty miserable but he still managed to sneak me some smiles. Babies are just the best, I swear they make everything so much better.

After my precious visit, the rumble-roar (Told you it was weird) and I headed over to the beehive tearoom. Now I was a bit nervous because I wasn't sure if that place would be her cup of tea. (No pun intended wocka wocka wocka) Holy smokes that girl adored this place! She was dancing around our table the whole time while occasionally stopping to munch on her scone or petites four or her flower shaped pb & j or her millions of berries. She had like two sips of tea but she looked so ridiculously adorable holding her cup that it didn't matter if she didn't even try it. I tricked her into leaving after sitting there for over an hour and we walked to the cute antique stores on Broadway. Did I mention it was the best day ever? That wasn't even the end of it- we ended up going to Decades and she helped me pick out the most amazing vintage dress that I of course took home even though I'd never have anywhere to show it off. At the end of the day I got to come home to my beloved Bandit and my much needed NyQuil because I'm afraid I'm coming down with something. I think perhaps my body just couldn't handle so much bliss in one day.

So now I say goodbye world, hello NyQuil + Pushing Daisies and thank you for the lovely day.

fresh

I've been standing at the same crossroad for the last few months. The first road to choose from is one that is familiar and I'd have a lot of friends along the way to keep me company during my travels. The thing about this road is that it doesn't lead to anywhere, especially anywhere that I would want to be. The second road is very strange to me and very scary although there's nothing there to be afraid of. It's the unknown that is so frightening to me. Now this road wouldn't be the easier of the two but it's the road that would get me to where I need to be and where I truly want to end up. Decisions decisions.

A couple of days ago I was playing with Lucy* when she said something that really stuck with me...

"I don't like being apart, I like being together."

Now when you first read this you would think she was talking about being with or without someone she loves but that is not the case. Lucy was talking about herself because I was pretending to take her ears and nose off of her face. In my own way I can relate more than ever with that at this time in my life. I feel like for a while I've been "apart" and I've finally said enough is enough and it's time to start putting myself together.

So, I have made what is an incredibly huge decision for me. I've decided to take the second road. Not only have I chosen that road but I have also bravely started walking down it.

I'm terrified.

*In case you don't already know, Lucy is the incredibly adorable three year old that I nanny)

parachutes

So, there was an article in the New York Times last Sunday titled "Single, Female, Mormon, Alone". I am grateful for Nicole Hardy, the writer, and for her honesty on something that I think runs through most single LDS girl's minds at least once or twice. It was really refreshing for me to read something like that in a major newspaper. It's important for women to share their struggles and journeys with one another and with the world. I cannot say that I relate to everything that was expressed by Nicole but there's a chunk of it that I find a lot of truth in. My friend Kaneischa blogged about this article and I really liked what she had to contribute to the subject. You can read it here:
http://kaneischa.wordpress.com/2011/01/10/closer-to-home-than-i-wish-it-was/
If you're curious to hear some of my thoughts on the matter then you should read the comment that I left on Kaneischa's post.

Last night Bandit and I discovered a new winter activity.
First you will need to have the proper necessities:
-Boots with absolutely no grip
-A dog
-A hill
-Snow
After you are well equipped, simply start walking the dog downhill. The dog will then begin to pull you, and since there is no grip on your shoes, you will slide the whole way down the hill. It seriously is my new favorite thing and Bandit gets all of his much needed exercise and outdoor time!

Now I will leave you with what I find to be an appropriate song for today:

Icarus by White Hinterland

I heard it playing on my favorite radio station (KRCL 90.9 fm) and it just went perfect with all of the fresh beautiful snow outside.

mm bop mm bop

It's 2011? Weird. So weird.
I feel like 2010 lasted like 3 months but A LOT happened in that 3 months.
I'm so grateful for this new year and just in the first 13 days of it a lot has changed.

I had a really hard time with some things last year, especially things that I could never come to understand. I feel like all of those unknown demons I've been holding onto inside of me have finally shown their faces and now there is nothing left of them to intrigue me so I can finally let go and put them all behind me. I've learned that all of the what ifs in life should only be thoughts passing through, they are never meant to be things to hold onto. False hope has been the death of me these past couple years and I've learned my lesson. I will no longer let other's drag me along and intrigue me with their shallow and false relationships. I'm in no way implying that I am always a saint to others but I'm definitely more aware of my actions now and hope that I'll handle all of my relationships with careful thought to all parties involved from now on.

2010
I moved back to Salt Lake City and have had nothing but love for that decision.
I started a new job nannying for an incredible family that I've come to adore and call my own.
I got my own apartment and have really enjoyed living in solitude.
I visited the urgent care more than I ever have in my entire life and all for the most ridiculous reasons.

2011
I got a dog! That's all that really matters so far this year.
I am so appreciative to all of my friends who pretended to be really excited for me when I excitedly told them I got a dog. Really, thank you.
And to all of those who didn't even try to amuse me....come on.

(Photo cred to the lovely Michelle Cordon Lepinski)

This my friends, is my beloved Bandit.
I got him from some guy on ksl who moved into a place where he wasn't allowed to keep him. Getting dogs from random people is always a gamble but I totally lucked out. Besides from his old name being stupid (Shadow), this dog is the greatest dog ever so far. He's well trained and he just has loved me from the second we met. He's half pomeranian and half mini american eskimo and about a year old so he's over the whole crazy puppy phase. I keep getting comments that he looks like a fox which I LOVE because I've always wanted a pet fox and now I have a dog that looks like a fox so good enough! I just love him and am so grateful I found this little gem.

So, I step forward into this year with a smile and high hopes for more reasons to smile.
I also go into this year with the knowledge that I have a Heavenly Father. For the first time in my life I know without a doubt that I not only have a Heavenly Father but I also am lucky enough to have a brother who is my savior and has made true happiness possible for me. These things did not come to me easily, I spent a long time without them and going back and forth, but everything seems so much easier now and life itself makes a lot more sense. For the first time I just feel like everything is going to be okay and that, I feel, is the best way to start a new year.

I think I'm going to try and start blogging a picture taken with my minolta, a piece of writing, and a favorite song for the day everyday. We'll see if I'm motivated enough to keep that up. For now though, I'm just going to leave you with a good song. This song has really left an impression on me today:

merry little christmas

This holiday season has probably been my favorite of my adult life.
I feel like a lot of good and a lot of bad has happened this year and more than ever I was in need of a lovely way to end 2010 and this past week has brought that for me.
I'm so blessed to have been able to spend Christmas at home with my family. My family makes everything better and everything always is 937 times more fun with them.
One of my presents this year was the first season of The Muppet Show. YES! I've always had a place in my heart for the muppets and I think that it was probably my favorite present this year. I popped the dvd in after we opened presents and this beautiful piece with the famous dancer Juliet Prowse came on and I thought I'd share the gem with you....

I hope all of you had a marvelous holiday and I wish the best for the new year.
(Oh and one of my goals of 2011 is to be more frequent with my blog updates I promise!)

P.S. I looooved True Grit and I wish they would start making more movies like it these days.

twenty three and free

I had a strange but beautiful birthday this last friday.
The day consisted of strawberries on sourdough, an awfully incredible art museum that stole my heart, a planetarium, mint limeade and watermelon at a farmers market and of course being in good company.

I feel like twenty three is a weird age, I feel weird, but at the same I have this sneaking suspicion that it's going to be one of my favorite ages.

This weekend I had the sweetest pleasure of meeting my nephew for the very first time. The little guy is almost ten months and is the most precious and happiest thing I have ever seen in all my days. I love him more than anything and it broke my heart that I had to say goodbye to his adorable face and go back to Utah. Oh how I wish he didn't live so far away.

While I was home we all sat down during breakfast and watched our favorite childhood show Rugrats. In that moment I felt like we were all little kids in our old house on our old beige couches laughing hysterically and not having a care in the world. We had the greatest childhood. In one of the episodes we watched, Chuckie said the greatest thing to Tommy....

"Life is so hard, Tommy...sometimes I think it is the hardest thing."

Couldn't agree more Chuckie.

she's a dying breed

Robert Wolders' words on Audrey Hepburn...

"Once she sensed that she could trust somebody, she'd do anything for them. And if she were disappointed in them, it would be the end of the world for her."

if only, if only

Last week I was driving Lucy to the store to get some medicine and juice for her poor tummy ache.
(Lucy is the precious doll that I nanny)
About a block from the store this happened...

Lucy: "Haley?"
Me: "Yes Lucy love?"
Lucy: "Do you want to come live in my parade?"
Me: "Yes yes yes I would love to!"

What a lovely thought, to live in a 2 year old's idea of a parade. I would love to live in Lucy's imagination, I absolutely love the way she thinks and views things. She's just so precious to me.

On another lovely note, I adore the Lindsays in my life.

Lindsay Wright is my one true fetus friend. Well, she's going to be in Utah in a couple weeks and I just can't wait to see her and listen to her laugh because it's my favorite :)

Lindsay Chapman is my favorite redhead. Ever. Today she told me she was going to be in town this weekend and I almost passed out I was so happy. That's not even the best part...she might be moving here in September- greatest news ever!

I can't wait Lindsays, I can't wait.

anyone home?

So today I was driving home and thought to myself "I'll stop by the Wrights and see what they're up to." (The Wrights are basically my second family and they're some of the greatest funnest people)
When I pulled up to their house I knocked and rang the doorbell like 4 times and no answer, so I went back to my car to write a note. I then went back to the door, knocked some more and let myself in. I left the note on their kitchen counter along with some fresh vegetables, I grabbed a snack, went to the bathroom and played with the little dog Buster for a while. When I finally got in my car to leave up comes a big red Jeep with Jeff and Lauren. I told them I came to say hi but no one was here and they looked at me like I was a crazy person and told me Jolene was home. "No way" I said, I've been in there forever and there isn't a soul there. We all went inside to prove the other wrong and who did we find sitting out on the deck reading a book?
Jolene.
How did we not notice each other the whole time?
I thank the lord all the time for things like this that seem to always happen to me. He always finds someway to keep me entertained. You probably would only find this entertaining too if you were there or know the Wrights but I couldn't stop myself from sharing it- it made my day.
I just love the Wrights.

virgo virgo

So all my life I haven't been much into horoscopes or astrology. I mean I've read my horoscopes out of curiosity but never truly thought much of them.

Well, that was then and this is now. I'm not saying I believe every word of it or base my thoughts and actions daily on them, but I've found that my horoscopes as of late have been very helpful. I go check my horoscope like I'm going to an old wise Chinese great grandmother for advice. Lately, more often than not, my horoscope has been pretty accurate in addressing problems I've been facing and then having the best solutions for them. Maybe I am becoming a crystal believing, look to the stars nut but I can't help but find so much comfort in astrology these days.

Here's an example of one that I really needed to read that day...

VIRGO Jul, 15, 2010
Your life may be an open book right now, Virgo. Whether you realize it or not, your emotions and inner turmoil over a certain issue are totally transparent. That doesn't mean you have to confirm anyone's suspicions about your feelings by addressing the problem verbally as well. It's best to let someone guess. Don't worry about an accusation, or about someone's lack of confidence in you. If you simply roll with the punches and be conscientious in all that you do - as is your usual way - the truth will come out when it counts.

Well there you have it folks, the power of the Droid apps and a 50 something year old woman who has a nurturing imagination.
Am I the only one who's crazy?

the washboard

Hello again. Man I've gotten so bad at writing in this which makes me so sad because I love it.
I feel like so much has been going on that I wanted to write about but my mind is all staticky right now.
(Yes staticky is a word- I looked it up I promise.)

First order of business: I finally have a place in salt lake!
I made the decision to do away with roommates and I found the perfect place to try this whole living alone thing out.
I have a two bedroom place in a 4-plex up in the avenues. Now the place is a bit old and has some wear and tear but it has a lot of charm and potential! I am just in love with it.
I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make the most of the space though. Perhaps I'll put some pictures up and you lovely people can tell me what you think and maybe give me some thoughts on what to do with it...

Second order of business: Unwanted weeding.
I feel like every year I go through a period of losing people that I was close to. Not in a physical sense but in an emotional one. I feel like it's always out of my control and it's a hard thing for me. Well, I've just been through it again but this time there was something different about it. I think maybe I'm finally starting to grow up because in the recent dilemma I did my best to stand my ground and accepted the situation for what it is. I had to let this person go, they needed to figure life for themself and I needed to let go in order to remain my true self. What I've taken from this experience is that you have to let some things fall apart in order to allow other things to build up and grow. Life is just like a washboard sometimes- you have to wash some stains away sometimes to see things for what they truly are.

Well, that's enough rambling for today.
